Celebrating The Sheffield Chorale's 50th Anniversary in 2024
The Sheffield Chorale Composition Competition
The Sheffield Chorale was pleased to hold the Choral Composition Competition in celebration of our 50th anniversary. We invited composers from around the world to participate and contribute to the rich tradition of choral music.
The Sheffield Chorale is a mixed voice choir which sings all kinds of music, accompanied and a cappella, from early music to modern part-songs, as well as major choral works.
Both the winning and second place entries were premiered on Saturday 16 November 2024 as part of the finale of a year long programme of celebrations for the choir’s 50th anniversary.
Winners
The Sheffield Chorale is absolutely delighted to announce the winners of our Composition competition!
The winning entry was Winter Stars, a beautiful composition by Jon Uribarri Ugarte, a 22 year old Spanish medical student of the University of the Basque Country. In his words: “While my days are consumed by the intricacies of medical science, my heart beats to rhythm of music.” A worthy winner indeed and we can’t wait to perform his piece. In close second place was a wonderful piece called Greet Again The Mountain by composer and pianist Greg Harradine. Based in the Scottish Borders, he is influenced equally by classical and folk tradition.
Both Jon and Greg were in the audience for the premiere performance of their compositions. We were pleased also to welcome Jon’s parents as they travelled from Spain for the performance.
