Requiem for Unsung Heroes - 15th November 2025
In November 2025 as part of Remembrance Season, The Sheffield Chorale was delighted to get the opportunity to partner with Yorkshire Wind Orchestra. The programme featured compositions from musicians at the heart of both groups; Keiron Anderson, MD of YWO and Sue Hughes, soprano with TSC.
Both groups relished the chance to work on these pieces together, resulting a powerful and memorable evening for performers and audience alike.
Keiron Anderson’s works explore vulnerability, remembrance, and hope. Children of the World reflects on innocence and shared responsibility for the future, Prayer Before Birth gives voice to fear and compassion in a troubled world, and Path to Remembrance traces a personal journey through loss towards reflection and healing.
‘It was a great pleasure to rehearse the programme and it quickly became apparent that as well as being a great choir, there was real energy and enthusiasm which made the music communicate really well.’ Keiron Anderson, Musical Director, YWO
Sue Hughes’ Requiem for Unsung Heroes came about as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Sue cleverly interwove the traditional texts from the Requiem Mass with contemporary poems chosen for their resonance with the challenging times brought by the pandemic.
This was only the second outing for the ‘Requiem’; her original setting was for upper voices and string orchestra, however, she re-wrote it for SATB choir, woodwind and brass for this special collaboration with Yorkshire Wind Orchestra.
‘People seemed to understand what the work was about; they were prepared to play or sing or listen and experience. A Requiem is a marvellous vehicle with which to convey important truth. There was an understanding that music can so often touch places where words are just not sufficient. The choir and orchestra put their hearts and souls into the performance. I am inordinately grateful.’ Sue Hughes, composer of The Requiem for Unsung Heroes and TSC member
